The Tarleton running game helped lift the team past the Javelinas in their overtime victory, gaining 234 yards and four rushing touchdowns.

With 45 seconds remaining in the game, the Tarleton Texan football team trailed 49-46 in this weekend's playoff game against Texas A&M-Kingsville. Tarleton sent out their field goal team in an attempt to tie up the game and head into overtime. This attempt was far from normal as the team aimed for a 64-yard field goal, one yard farther than the NFL record and second longest in NCAA Division II history.

Kicker Garrett Lindholm broke the previous school record of 55-yards, which he set earlier this season. The kick however was not the only exciting event in the game. The Texans took the 57-56 playoff victory in front of a crowd of 13,000 fans in double overtime.

The Javelinas scored a touchdown and made the extra point to get the lead 56-49 giving the Texans one drive to try and respond. The Texans responded with a touchdown and went for the two-point conversion and the win. Junior quarterback Scott Grantham ran in the conversion to win the game.

Tarleton jumped out to a quick lead to start the game as they went up 14-0 in the first seven minutes of the game. The first score was a 51-yard touchdown pass from Grantham to wide receiver Jahmeel Hobson with 12:24 still left in the first quarter. Lindholm made the extra point to put the Texans up 7-0.

Texan linebacker Matt Knicky, intercepted Javelinas quarterback Billy Garza on the following drive to give the Texan offense a chance to further the lead. The Texans did not disappoint as Grantham hit Hobson for another deep pass and was tackled at the one-yard line but Texan fullback Keith Demby ran the ball in for a second Tarleton touchdown. With 8:39 still in the first quarter Lindholm made the kick to extend the lead to 14-0.

The Javelinas kept the game in hand as they responded with a 12-play, 80-yard drive that was capped by a one-yard touchdown run by TAMUK's Fred Winborn. Javelinas kicker Christian Brom made the extra point to narrow the gap to 14-7.

The Javelinas tied the game following Tarleton running back Roderick Smith's fumble when Javelinas Delra Glover picked up the ball and ran it back 26-yards for a touchdown. Brom's successful extra point tied the game up 14-14.
