The Tarleton TexAnn golf team wrapped up the fall portion of their 2009-2010 season, following four tournaments. The TexAnns took first place at the Lady Buff Stampede and Central Oklahoma Invitational, while taking second at the Angelo State Invitational, and took sixth at Queens University Top 18 Invitational, which hosted the top 18 ranked teams.
The TexAnns have all five of last year's division championship team members returning, as well as two new players on the roster. Returning member junior Carla Cooper from Arlington Bowie High School earned First Team All-American as one of seven to make the team and is the second TexAnn to earn that honor under coach Jerry Doyle. The team also has two foreign players from Malaysia on the fall roster.
The team is finished with the fall half of the season, but will return to action for the spring portion of the season February 21. The team will play six to 10 tournaments, leading up to the championship, and will host the annual Tarleton State Coca-Cola Invitational in Granbury April 11-13.
Each tournament allows five team members to compete; however, teams take extra players to compete as individuals every chance they can. At each tournament, and across the season, teams and individuals receive separate rankings.
"I feel good about the situation; the new players are adding a lot. We have as good a chance as anyone to win at the end of the season, and this fall season is looking good leading into the spring," Doyle said.
Doyle brings his great experience to the team, after playing on the pro tour for 19 years. He is a Texan graduate with a degree in agricultural business and played on the men's golf team. He received the national Coach of the Year award for the 2007-2008 season.
The team finished a successful 2008-2009 season which included winning the West Region and the Lone Star Conference Championships. The team traveled to the national tournament last year, leading the tournament after day one, but after facing a rain delay on the second day and an injury to Cooper, the team finished the tournament tied for sixth place. The team has also hosted two Academic All-Americans last season: Cooper and Melanie Tham.
The Texans received a Resolution from the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents with congratulations from a successful season. The teams' high finish in multiple tournaments, individual successes and overall standing were commended by the system.
The team will also receive their conference championship rings during half time of the Texas versus West Texas A&M football game this up-coming season. The team is currently training in their off season to prepare for the upcoming spring, in hopes of winning another conference championship and another chance at the national tournament.
"I think we have a pretty good chance to make the top three in regionals, which will allow us the opportunity to compete in the national tournament," Doyle said.
