Texan football closer to playoffs with victory

The No. 7 Tarleton Texans traveled to Angelo State Saturdays with the goal of getting a win and staying in the tie for first place of the Lone Star Conference South Division. The Texans were led to their 21-14 victory by a strong pass and catch game from quarterback Scott Grantham and receiver Devin Guinn and a record game by running back Roderick Smith.
Smith moved into second place on the all time career rushing list with his 15 carries for 104-yards and a touchdown. Smith now has 3,094 yards for his career, passing Derrick Ross who had 3,072 from 2004-05.
Meanwhile, Grantham had a one target arm for most of the night as he racked up 206 yards passing with two touchdowns and one interception after going 13-of-24. Guinn was the primary recipient on the night leading the team with eight catches for 129-yards and two touchdowns. The Texan offense combined to earn 368 total yards of offense, 206 through the air and 162 yards rushing.
The Rams were the first to land on the scoreboard with 8:06 left in the first quarter as the team moved the ball 72 yards on 16 plays during the opening drive. Running back Garrett Tidwell connected with receiver V'Keon Lacy on a five-yard touchdown pass to cap the drive. Kicker Ryan Smith made the extra point to put the Rams up 7-0.
The Texans scored next as the team moved the ball 87 yards on five plays and Guinn caught the first of his touchdown scores. Grantham hit Guinn on a 33-yard pass with 1:50 left before the half and kicker Garrett Lindholm connected on the extra point to tie the game 7-7.
Smith earned his only touchdown of the night as he ran the ball in from two yards out to cap-off a seven play, 59-yard drive that left 2:50 in the third quarter. Lindholm again made the extra point to give the Texans the lead 14-7.
Guinn caught his second touchdown off of a three yard pass from Grantham with 11:57 left in the game to cap off a 62 yard, seven play drive. Lindholm made his third PAT extending the Texan lead to 21-7.
