Losing stuff has always been easy but finding what you've lost has been another thing all together. Finding your lost keys, thumb drives and wallets on the Tarleton campus is becoming much easier thanks to a new roster of lost and found items on your myGateway website. On March 16, the university began posting a list of misplaced items on the lost and found channel located inside the myGateway portal. The site's been down for the past month but Terri Jones, a program specialist with the campus police, says it will be up and running by next week.

As of March 16, all items found and brought to the university police department other than Texan cards, which are required to be turned into the Texan card office directly, are posted on the Lost and Found channel. Because items are turned frequently, the myGateway page will be updated weekly.

"This will make it easier for students to see what has been turned in if they have recently lost an item," Jones said.

The lost and found has been a part of the Tarleton campus since the campus first opened. Often though, people who lose or misplace items don't think to check with the police department to see if their items have been found. Typical items turned in include keys, wallets, licenses and computer gadgets, but occasionally students turn in bigger things such as purses, motorcycle helmets and iPods.

In the past, misplaced items were turned into individual lost and found offices in various buildings around campus, then eventually turned over the campus police.

The centralized lost and found, Jones said. "will allow students one point of contact for all items " as well as a central place to search for lost items on the website. To reclaim an item, students are asked to sign a form with personal information and show valid identification

"If you have lost anything on campus, it is very likely that the police department will have it," Jones said.

Some unclaimed items are eventually discarded.

If the items are not valuables such as sunglasses or empty purses, they are kept in the lost and found for 6 months and if unclaimed after those 6 months, they are then either destroyed or sent to surplus (on campus auction). However, if the items are valuable such as keys, wallets, etc., they are kept in the lost and found for 1 year and if unclaimed after that year, they are sent off to be destroyed.

Each item turned in has to be logged in with a precise description of the items and its contents, if any. That allows the police department to keep track of missing items and permits students to look for their items easier on the myGateway portal.

Questions regarding the lost and found at the university police department, can be directed to Nelda Moore or Terri Jones at (254) 968-9002.
