The College of Business at Tarleton was established in 1989 when it broke away from the College of Agriculture. Since then, the college has moved into their new building, with 16 undergraduate programs and four graduate programs and has been many times considered one of the best programs in the country.

"Our CIS program has been ranked number one at least three times in the 1990s by AITP [Association of Information Technology Professionals]," said COBA Dean Dr. Raja Iyer.

Since COBA became a college, students now can receive many certifications besides just getting their degree. Accounting students have the option to take a few extra classes so they can sit for the CPA, or Certified Public Account, exam. Computer Information Systems majors have the option of become Sysco and Microsoft Certified.

The business college also has a separate accreditation they go through besides the general university accreditation done by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. COBA is also accredited by the Association of College Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).

"We were one of the first ten schools in the nation to receive accreditation from ACBSP," he said.

The program is always growing. Iyer spoke of a semester when two of his professors had received their Ph. D.

"When I came to the CIS Department as the Department Head we had two of our faculty members there working on their Ph.D. at the University of North Texas and last December they both, in the same semester, graduated with their Ph.D.s in hand. Over the three years I was here, I felt very proud , not only as the Dean of the college, but also as the department head before that," Iyer said.

Iyer also said that he is very proud of the college and that it always does the best it can for its students.

"We follow the creed of Tarleton. We do not short change our students," Iyer said. "There are times when I feel really proud whenever a student writes a letter, a complimentary note, about what a good job their teacher or professor is doing in their class. I get that almost on a regular basis."

Since the college did not find its way into the building it is in now until summer of 1989, it will have most of it celebrations for the anniversary this next year. The college is already planning for homecoming in the fall.

"We are still in the planning stages now. What we are planning to do is to have a tailgate party at the homecoming game after the parade," Iyer said. "We would possibly have a tent out here and have all of our alumni come to the game. We are starting to work on that and we will start publicizing it as early as possible in the next few weeks or so."
