On Monday Feb. 9, a new e-mail server will become available to Tarleton students. Microsoft Live will replace the current Gateway e-mail.

"Microsoft Live is a suite of products that is allowing Tarleton to use its server for free, while allowing the university to provide its own domain," said Stephen Wilson, Manager of User Support Services in Information Technology Services. "It will provide services to students, that Tarleton can provide."

Students can expect to see some changes with the new e-mail service. "The most noticeable change will be the format of the e-mail address," said Wilson. "The new format will be firstname.lastname@go.tarleton.edu," Wilson said.

Another major difference that students will encounter is that the new e-mail accounts will be available to students even after they graduate from Tarleton.

"The only thing that changes after they graduate is that Microsoft will place ads on the web pages but other than that, they will continue to have full use of the e-mail account after their graduation," Wilson said.

Students face a deadline with the activation of their new account though. Starting Monday, Feb. 9 students will be able to start activating their new accounts.

"Even though students will have full access to their new accounts, Tarleton will still use the old service to communicate with students," said Wilson. "Students will still need to check their old email accounts in order to keep up with university business."

According to Wilson, students will have until Mar. 16, the day after Spring Break, to activate the new Microsoft Live account. On this date, the university will begin using the new service to communicate with the students.

"Students will have access to their old accounts for a few weeks after this deadline, but will eventually lose this access," said Wilson.

Wilson said that students will soon receive e-mails notifying them of the availability of the new e-mail account and instructions on how to activate the new account.

Information Technology Services will also launch a website on Friday Feb. 6 in order for students to gather information on how to activate and use their new accounts. The website is www.tarleton.edu/main/email.
