"The award we received was outstanding designed specialized facility in American School and University Magazine," said Robert Nimmo, Director of the Recreation Sports Center. "I'm very delighted the rec. center was awarded this."
Along with Nimmo, Vice President for Student Life, Wanda Mercer is also delighted of the award received and even said that she helped with the plans for the facility we have today.
"I was involved in the planning... but I have always thought it was a beautiful facility and I'm glad it's being acknowledged," Mercer said. "I have high expectations that it will receive other awards."
Mercer may be right. Nimmo said that the facility should be awarded again within the next year.
"Our main goal was that you could see eighty percent of what we have in the building when you walk in," Nimmo said. "The architects accomplished that task."
The facility is very attractive and with the open windows, it invites people to come in and workout. Tarleton's recreation center opened in Oct. 2007 and is equipped with three gym floors, racquetball courts, a climbing wall, free weights, workout classrooms, a track and cardio based machines on the top level. There are vending machines, towels available, men's and women's locker rooms and also, "outdoor pursuits."
