Texans drop the ball, miss playoffs

The Tarleton Texans were removed from the playoff picture with losses to Abilene Christian University (10-0) and West Texas A&M (10-1). On Saturday, Nov. 8, at Canyon the Texans playoff hopes were dashed by a 51-0 loss to the WTAMU.

The Texans' two leading rushers, Roderick Smith and Travis Evans, gained 155 yards rushing on 22 carries combined, but neither was able to reach the end zone. Junior running back Smith carried 16 times for 63 yards and reached 1,024 yards on the season, becoming is the first 1,000-yard season rusher since Derrick Ross in 2005.

The Buffaloes took the ball to start the game going 80 yards on 10 plays and taking 5:11 off the clock. The score came from a two-yard run by running back Keith Flemming. Kicker James Chandler's extra point made the score 7-0 in favor of West Texas.

The Texans took the ball to the Buffalo 25-yard line in five plays, but quarterback Scott Grantham fumbled the ball and it was recovered by the Buffaloes and taken to the West Texas 40-yard line. The Buffaloes took the ball eight yards and 59 yards to kick a field goal and increase the lead to 10-0 with 2:37 left in the first quarter.

The Texans returned to the redzone after an eight-play, 67-yard drive that took 2:47. The 28-yard field goal attempt with kicker Garrett Lindholm went wide right and the ball was turned over to West Texas at their own 20-yard line.

The Buffaloes made a 5:00 drive that went 80 yards in 11 plays following the missed field goal and scored off a 15-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Keith Null to wide receiver

West Texas scored one more time on a Wayne McKnight two-yard run following a six-play, 54-yard drive that left 2:31 in the half. Chandler's extra point made the lead 24-0.

The Texans returned to the redzone to open the second half following an Evans 49-yard run inside the West Texas 10-yard line, but failed to put points on the board as kicker Lindholm missed a 27-yard field goal wide right for the second time.
