It is the time of year when pink ribbons can be seen all over to show support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is the time for numerous fund-raisers to spread around the country for breast cancer research in hopes of raising money. According to the Susan G. Komen Web site, there are more than 200,000 new cases of breast cancer and 40,000 deaths each year, meaning that almost everyone knows somebody, whether it's a family member or a friend of a friend, that has been affected by breast cancer.
Breast Cancer 3-Day:
It is also time to start getting those tennis shoes ready for the Breast Cancer 3-Day in November, wher ,according to the 3-Day Web site, thousands of people across the nation will walk a total of 60 miles within three days. These walkers first have to raise $2,200 in donations to participate.
More information regarding the 3-Day can be found at www.the3day.org.
Relay for Life:
Locally, those who wish to donate to cancer research can participate in the Relay for Life. According to the Tarleton Web site, teams participating in the Relay for Life sign up for intervals of time, during the 12-hour relay. The teams will walk for as long as they signed up for, with sponsors donating money the distancest they have walked.
Local Businesses:
The Barnes and Noble Tarleton State University Bookstore on campus is running a promotion called "Shop for a Cause." According to a flyer posted in the store, when a customer purchases a pink ribbon-adorned item including T-shirts and flash drives, Barnes and Noble donates the proceeds to the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund. Last year, the company donated more than $50,000 to NBCCF.
Sally Beauty Supply is also selling numerous pink-ribbon items with proceeds going towards breast cancer research.
