Members of the Student Government Association, SPA, Greek Life and Residential Living and Learning are deputized to register students. The committee has already registered 500 students, with a goal of 1,000 before the Nov. 4 election. Those who registered for the first time, or switched their registration to Erath County, received a free Rock the Vote T-shirt at the concert.
Rock the Vote is a nationwide effort that was founded 18 years ago to encourage younger audiences to participate in the voting process. Participating musical artists perform as young people register to vote in their area and are given information about different elections. Artists ranging from Madonna to Snoop Dogg, perform across the nation. This was the Josh Abbott Band's first year to participate.
The band includes Josh Abbott singing vocals and playing acoustic guitar, Austin Davis on electric banjo, Preston Wait playing fiddle and electric guitar, Edward Villanueva on the drums and Daniel Almodova playing bass guitar. The band originated in Lubbock at Texas Tech University in 2006. After gaining popularity on the Tech campus, the Josh Abbott Band released a self-titled, four track album in 2007. The band now tours across the country from North Carolina to Chicago.
At Rock the Vote, the Josh Abbott Band played a variety of songs from their newest album, "Scapegoat," as well as their original hits. Organizations including the Plowboys and Purple Poo joined many students on the patio to dance, sing and register to vote.
