Gough Hall, along with Moody Hall, stands empty at the beginning of the 2008-2009 academic year.

In the last academic year The J-TAC reported that Gough and Moody residence halls and their possible closure of the two Tarleton landmarks. The article reported that officials denied rumors that both halls were slated to be demolished sometime in this coming year.

The Residential Living and Learning Department has officially confirmed that Gough and Moody have been left void of residents this year.

Tarleton administrators cited safety concerns as the reasons for the closures.

"Administration was afraid of someone coming along, cutting open a screen on a window and raping a resident," said a Residential Living and Learning staff member who has not been authorized to speak for the Tarleton administration and wished to remain unanimous.

The Gough and Moody Residence Halls are known as "fresh-air" halls because neither building is equipped with air conditioning units. Most residents leave their windows open, many with box fans in them, to cool their rooms. Administration says this leaves residents, particularly those on the ground floors, vulnerable to anyone forcing their way into the buildings.

Rusty Jergins, Associate Vice President and Dean of Students, said the fresh air facilities have had a negative impact of recruitment efforts of the university in prior years.

Many students registering in late spring to early summer are involuntarily assigned residence in the non-air conditioned rooms, leading to discontent with their living situation.

As of this edition of The J-TAC, the future of Gough and Moody has not been decided. Jergins said a decision pertaining to the renovation of the residence halls should occur within the academic year.

In prior years, occupancy of campus residence halls has remained lower than 90 percent. However, this year residents' halls are at 96 percent capacity, Gough and Moody have been removed from the residence inventory.

I was one of the many residents fortunate enough to live in Moody and Gough, the "Fresh-Air" or "Non-air" dorms. These residence halls always brought the residents closer together, we had to because we shared a bathroom!
I am very saddened and disappointed at Tarleton for closing two historic landmarks. (Continued…)

Please note Mr Dome, in your infinite proofreading wisdom, the word ?erreors? does not appear in any of the dictionaries I have run across. The J-Tac staff is comprised of a group of students, many of whom volunteer their time, to produce the best publication they can to benefit the rest of the Tarleton Family. (Continued…)
