The Tarleton Texans scored the final 41 points of the season opener Thursday to take a 51-10 victory from Southeastern Oklahoma in Stephenville.

The Texans scored 27 unanswered points in the second half to improve to 7-2 in home openers since 2000.

"I thought we started out a little sluggish at first, but I was pleased with our effort in the first game of the season," said Tarleton head coach Sam McElroy.

The Texans got on the board first when Garrett Lindholm connected on the first of three field goals, this one from 46 yards. The kick ended a six-play, nine-yard drive that started when Jamaal Steamer recovered a SOSU fumble on the Savage Storm 38-yardline.

SOSU quickly fought back, taking a 7-3 lead when Michael Goodlow caught a 27-yard pass from starting quarterback Brandon McCain. Cole Jones added the extra point to give the visitors the lead after closing a nine-play, 64-yard drive.

With 47 seconds left in the first quarter, George Murray punched the ball in from two yards out to end an 11-play, 64-yard attack. Lindholm's kick gave Tarleton a 10-7 lead.

A 34-yard Cole Jones field goal with 7:41 remaining in the first half ended a nine-play, 39-yard drive by Southeastern and tied the game at 10 points apiece.
However, the Texans' Travis Evans took the ensuing kickoff 96 yards for a special teams touchdown. Lindholm's kick put the Texans up for good, 17-10.

Two possessions later, Scott Grantham found Shamarr Prentice for a 28-yard touchdown pass that closed a five-play, 50-yard drive. The extra point gave the Texans a 24-10 lead heading into halftime, and Tarleton was to get the ball to open the third quarter.

The first six plays in the second half led to six first downs for the home team before the offense stalled and Lindholm hit a 30-yard field goal. The drive took nine-plays and 59 yards to give Tarleton a 27-10 lead.

Evans then ran the ball in from four yards away with 7:30 remaining in the third period, giving the Texans a 34-10 lead after a seven-play, 28-yard attack after McNeal Uwajeh recovered a SOSU fumble.
