TexAnn volleyball falls short in Alamo City Classic

The Tarleton volleyball team played two five-set matches on Saturday at the McDermott Center in San Antonio, but were unable to come away with a victory as the TexAnns dropped both matches they played.

Tarleton (1-2) dropped their first match to Southwest Baptist (3-1), 3-2, before falling to tournament host Incarnate Word (2-2) 3-2 as well.

In the first match the TexAnns won the first set 25-20, but dropped a close second set 23-25 as the Bearcats tied it up. Tarleton had it's best hitting percentage as a team (.319) in set three, but a tought set four from the Bearcats tied the match 2-2 sending the match into a fifth and final set. SBU came out stong but the TexAnns came back to tie it up 11-11. SBU finsished even stronger though, collecting the final four points to win the match.

Allison Hill posted her third double-double in as many matches as she collected match-highs with 19 kills and 25 digs. Missy Castro had her second double-double of the season as well, posting 12 kills and 16 digs. Jessie Hartman and Danielle Perkins split setter duties and Hartman finished the match with 27 assists while Perkins finished with 28.

Tarleton then turned around to face tournament host, Incarnate Word, and the TexAnns

The TexAnns were down most of set one, but were able to keep it within range before falling 25-19. Tarleton opened the second set with a 4-0 lead before taking the set 25-19. Tarleton pulled to within a point in set three, down 24-23, but an attack from Kendall Hansend was blocked and the Cardinals went up 2-1. Tarleton then took the fourth set, 25-22, to force a final set between the two teams.

After being down early, Emily Richardson's solo block tied the set at 5-5 before Castro's kill gave the TexAnns a 6-5 lead. The Cardinals took every advantage they had and outscored the TexAnns 10-4 to take the set (15-10) and the match, 3-2.

Rachel Wolf led the TexAnns with 13 kills against the Cardinals while Hartman led in both assists (23) and digs (19).

The TexAnns return to the court next weekend in the Texas A&M-International Border Olympics Tournament in Laredo. Tarleton will face North Dakota on Friday, Sept. 5 at 11 a.m. for it's first match.
