Villegas is a graduating student of Jonathan Hooper, whose instrument of choice is the tuba.
The recital began with a series of pieces played with piano accompaniment by Steve Chambers. These pieces included I.Prelude and II.Romanza from Concerto for Bass Tuba by Ralph Vaughn Williams. Next Villegas and Chambers performed Suite No. 1 or "Effie Suite" by Alec Wilder.
Next Villegas was joined on stage by fellow tuba player Kyle Hoffman for No. 12 Swing and No. 19 Sonata from 21 Distinctive Duets for Tuba by Roger Jones.
After a brief intermission, the stage was set for the largest arrangement of the evening, an ensemble of Villegas on tuba, Justin Hawkins on the chimes, Shawn LaFountain and Chris Klevin each on a marimba. The beautifully haunting Gretchen am Spinnrade by Franz Schubert had a special twist to it as the arrangement was by Villegas himself.
For the final pieces of the evening, Villlegas was joined by faculty members to complete a faculty and student quintet. Joining him was Bob Johnson on trumpet, Dr. Cara Pollard on trumpet, student Tom Hancock on the French Horn and Jonathan Hooper on the trombone.
The quintet played Polka from Hornsmoke by Peter Schikele, I. March and III. Rondo from Brass Quintet by Arthur Frackenpohl.
A reception followed the conclusion of the recital, where Villegas' family was busy setting out homemade cookies, fruit cups and punch. Villegas' mother Blassie Hernandez, his brother Albert Villegas, cousin Danielle Rodriguez, aunts Ruthie Rodriguez and Mary Soria were all present to support Villegas in the completion of his Senior year recital.
