Coming into Saturday's game against Texas Woman's University, the TexAnns were 19-8 all-time against the Pioneers and had won eight of the last ten meetings between the teams. Saturday's contest would prove no different as the TexAnns used strong outings from both Brittnie Haley and D'Anna Dingler to win a hard-fought game.
Entering the game, the Pioneers were averaging only 16.8 turnovers per contest, but a stingy Tarleton defense forced 22 turnovers.
Despite a rough first half in which they shot only 28 percent, the TexAnns took a 23-20 lead into the half. Dingler proved extremely valuable in the first half, playing all 20 minutes and grabbing seven boards. Haley had an exceptional half as well, and had eight points going into the break.
The second half proved much more successful for the TexAnns as they were able to increase their shooting percentage to 50 percent. Both Krystal Cole and Haley were able to find their rhythm offensively and help the TexAnns begin to pull away from the Pioneers.
With Tarleton leading 52-50 with 41.7 seconds left to play, Haley drove the ball and scored on a lay-up. She was fouled by Jessica Durr of Texas Women's and after her free throw, the TexAnns led by five. The closest the Pioneers would get was within three as an off-the-mark three pointer by TWU's Tiandrea Dixon in the last three seconds sealed the victory for Tarleton.
Haley had an outstanding game in which she scored within one point of her career-high with 19 points. Cole also lit up the scoreboard in the second half as she finished very near a double-double with 12 points and eight rebounds. Dingler turned in 12 rebounds in the game and scored five points.
The TexAnns were out-rebounded by a much bigger Texas Women's team 40-36, but managed 16 second-chance points and shot 39.2 percent from the field. Tarleton was less than stellar at the free-throw line however, shooting only 53.6 percent from the charity stripe.
The win improves the TexAnns to 11-4 overall and 2-0 in the Lone Star Conference while Texas Women's fell to 5-10 and 0-2 in conference play.
The TexAnns will return to Wisdom Gym on Saturday, Jan. 26 as they square off against West Texas A&M.
