On a holiday that encourages everyone to focus on the positives in each person's life, the Non-traditional Student Organization gathered to enjoy each other's company.
"The nTo is a group for those that are different," said Mike Fortune, nTo President.
The nTo is an organization that accepts members that are not typical college students. The organization brings in members that are adults going back to school and students that are also parents.
"What makes non-traditional is attitude, not actions," said Patrice Fortune, nTo Secretary.
The most important aspect of nTo members, according to Patrice Fortune is that the members have different priorities in their lives. The members are older and have families already. While the majority of typical students are at school enjoying the experience and going to class, the members of nTo are maintaining a job, doing school work and, for most of them, supporting a family.
"The problem is it is hard to reach non-traditionals," said Patrice Fortune.
The nTo was founded this year and is open to anyone that wants to be involved. There are no dues and no rushing process for nTo. To be a member of nTo students just have to attend the events. Members do not have to be considered non-traditional to join.
The organization is also involved in school events. This Homecoming, nTo took part in beating the drum and they plan to attend basketball games as a group.
The nTo currently has about 10 members but plans to reach out to new members at orientation and hopes to grow more in its second year.
