On Saturday, Nov. 10, the Tarleton Texans will face their most important challenge of the season as the undefeated West Texas A&M Buffaloes come to town. If the Texans win, they will split the Lonestar Conference Championship with West Texas A&M and both teams will advance to playoffs. However, with a loss in this game the playoff fate of the Texans will depend on other teams' wins and losses.
The Texans are aiming to break the losing streak against the Buffaloes that goes back to the previous two years. Since the 2005-06 season, the Texans have been out-scored by a 51-42 point margin. The past two years' losses have had playoff implications for both the Texans and the Buffaloes. Both years the Texans have been left sitting at home.
The cornerstone of the Buffaloes offense is the passing attack that has borrowed the term "Air Raid" from Texas Tech. The passing attack has been led all season by 6'4", 220-pound quarterback Keith Null, a junior from Lampasas. Null has thrown for 2,814 yards and 29 touchdowns this season, with an average of 351.8 yards per game. He has the ability to spread the ball using a deep receiving corps, the top six of which are averaging over 38 yards per game.
The leading receiving threat is junior Charley Martin who has accumulated 658 yards and eight touchdowns in only eight games. The team's second leading receiver, true freshmen A.J. Ruffins, has racked up 542 yards and eight touchdowns this season. The team has tons of depth at receiver and has six with at least 300 yards this season and a combined 32 touchdowns. Ten receivers have at least one touchdown and nine have at least 100 yards receiving.
Behind this high-fly passing attack the Buffaloes also possess a very potent rushing attack. Keithon Fleming has carried the ball for 1,046 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns while averaging 8.4 yards per rush and 104.6 yards per game. While a dangerous running threat, Fleming has also managed to hurt teams through the air with 497 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Fleming is the leading scorer with 16 touchdowns and has 1,495 total yards of offensive gain.
