On Nov. 2, Alpha Phi Omega National Co-ed Fraternity (APO) announced the Study of Modern Asian Culture through Media (SMAC-TM) as the winner of the "Ugly Man on Campus" (UMOC) competition and fundraiser. SMAC-TM received over $253 in donations during UMOC, beating second place by only $10.
Eighty percent of the proceeds go to the winner, SMAC-TM's Philanthropy which is the Boys and Girls Club.
Larry Beasley, Executive Director of the Hood County Branch Boys and Girls Club was presented a giant cardboard check for $717.98 by APO.
"I am glad it went to the Boys and Girls Club. Any which way it went would have been great. All the organizations had good causes," said Adam Hamilton, President of SMAC-TM.
Six other teams participated in the fundraiser and helped earn the overall total, $897. They were Kappa Delta Chi (KD Chi), the Plowboys, the Purple Poo, Sigma Phi Lambda, Minority Student Leaders and Baptist Student Ministry.
"We're just happy to have been some help to the Boys and Girls Club," said John Ross who was pictured as the ugly man for SMAC-TM.
A very close second place was the BSM who earned over $243 for UMOC. Third place was KD Chi who brought in over $130.
"I thought that UMOC went very well this year compared to years past. We were able to raise more money for charity, and there was overall greater participation," said James Oxford, APO President.
