'Traditional' goes out the window

Here at Tarleton, many students do no fit the "normal" student profile whether it be because of age, marriage or children. As a result, a group called Non-Traditional Organization, or NTO, was formed.
A few years ago, NTO was a big organization, but it slowly lost popularity and members. However, this year President Michael Fortune and his wife Patrece Fortune have started NTO again in hopes that non-traditional students can find a place at Tarleton.
"My wife and I wanted to start NTO back up so us non-traditional students had an organization that catered to our needs," NTO President Michael Fortune said.
One of NTO's activities this year is working with the housing department to improve the on-campus housing for non-traditional students. At 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, NTO will be having an October Feast in the Texan Village Club House to talk about housing concerns.
The organization also has plans to start parents' night out. At least once a month, on this night, a babysitting service will be provided for NTO parents, so they can go out for the night. They are also planning for a women's night out and a men's night out.
"NTO is very family-oriented. When we have movie nights, they are family movies. If we are playing music it is appropriate and not vulgar. And we don't deal with alcohol," said Mrs. Fortune.
Even though NTO caters to the non-traditional students, Mr. Fortune states "we welcome anyone who wants to join even if they're not a non-traditional student."
NTO has a social gathering every Friday night, with activities like game night, movie night, family picnics, parents night out, or a party down at the Methodist Church. Also, every first and third Tuesday of the month, NTO hosts group meetings.
