One freshman is dead after a one-vehicle accident early Tuesday in a Tarleton parking lot near the intersection of Washington and Lillian streets.

The University News Service reported that Tarleton State University Police received a call at 3:22 a.m. Tuesday morning. Freshmen Stephen R. Cage, 19, of Conroe was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after emergency personnel arrived.

Cage was traveling with three other Tarleton freshmen, Ryan D. Mason, 18, Ryan K. Crutsinger, 18, and Matthew S. Ulibarri, 18. According to the Stephenville Empire-Tribune, all three were taken to Harris Methodist Erath County Hospital. Mason and Crutsinger are still in the hospital in stable condition, but Ulibarri was treated and released later that day.

In a press release from the University News Service, President Dennis P. McCabe responded to the accident saying, "Our concern is with the family and friends of Stephen." McCabe also extended his condolences to the three other students.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with them as well as the other students involved in the accident," he said.

An accident report from university police is still pending. It is not known if alcohol was a factor as the accident is still under investigation.

Tarleton officials say that services for Cage, a Management, Marketing and Administrative major, will take place in the chapel of Cashner Funeral Home in Conroe and are scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday evening from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
